Attorney General Kris Mayes expressed her support for the signing of Proposition 139, known as Arizona's Right to Abortion Initiative. The measure was passed and signed into law, signaling a significant shift in the state's legal landscape regarding abortion rights.
"Today is a good day for Arizona," Mayes stated. "With the passage and signing of Proposition 139, voters have spoken loudly and clearly in support of protecting a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body without government interference. That is a cause for celebration."
Mayes acknowledged the efforts of volunteers and organizers who contributed to bringing the initiative to the ballot. She emphasized their role in securing its passage, which she believes enshrines abortion rights within Arizona's constitution.
She highlighted that laws such as the 15-week and 20-week abortion bans are now considered unconstitutional due to this new initiative. Other restrictions that were previously in place may also be challenged under this framework.
"My office has been analyzing these issues and will be ready to work with health care providers and the courts to ensure clarity regarding Arizona’s abortion laws in the coming weeks and months," Mayes added.
The Attorney General concluded by celebrating what she views as a victory for freedom, privacy, and individual rights across Arizona. "But today, let’s celebrate this victory for freedom, privacy, and the rights of all Arizonans," she said.
