Attorney General Merrick B. Garland recently addressed the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, expressing gratitude and pride in their work. During his remarks, he reflected on a previous visit to the office, highlighting significant achievements over the past four years.

Garland noted that the office has gained public recognition for various important cases, including efforts against the Sinaloa Cartel, reducing violent crime, prosecuting cryptocurrency CEOs, and pursuing public corruption. He emphasized that this represents only a fraction of their work and acknowledged the dedication and long hours spent by staff away from their families.

While praising their aggressive pursuit of justice, Garland stressed the importance of adhering to legal principles. "Yes, you are aggressive prosecutors, aggressive investigators, aggressive attorneys in service of the public," he said. However, he highlighted their commitment to following the rule of law and making decisions based on federal prosecution principles.

Garland expressed a desire for the American public to witness the office's internal decision-making processes, stating they would be proud of how diligently these legal professionals uphold justice. He underscored that this dedication exemplifies where "the rule of law really exists in this country."

As Garland approaches the end of his tenure at the Justice Department, he conveyed confidence in the continued mission of upholding law and protecting civil rights. He described career lawyers as "the institutional backbone" and "the heart and soul" of the Department.

"I could not be more proud of you," Garland concluded, acknowledging their contributions to safeguarding American citizens.
