Attorney General Ken Paxton has announced an $83 million settlement with Kroger to address claims by the State of Texas and its Political Subdivisions regarding practices that contributed to the opioid crisis in the state. This agreement is part of a broader effort by Attorney General Paxton to hold the pharmaceutical industry accountable for exacerbating the national opioid epidemic, which has resulted in numerous overdoses and deaths.

So far, Attorney General Paxton has secured over $3 billion in settlements from drug manufacturers and other entities involved in the national opioid crisis. The funds obtained from these settlements are allocated for opioid abatement and managed by the Texas Opioid Council.

Local governments and county governments involved in the Texas Opioids Multidistrict Litigation are encouraged to join this settlement. By doing so, they can ensure that citizens and entities within Texas receive all entitled benefits and funds for opioid remediation. More information on how to participate is available on the Office of the Attorney General's website.

Participation in this settlement will enable subdivisions to receive direct payments and grants through opioid abatement funding provided by the Texas Opioid Council. The deadline for all Texas Political Subdivisions to sign up and benefit from this settlement is December 29, 2024.

“We’ve worked relentlessly to hold major pharmaceutical manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacies accountable for their role in the national opioid epidemic that has created so much suffering in our State,” said Attorney General Paxton. “This settlement is an important step in our ongoing efforts to securing justice for Texas.”
