The Academy of Certified Trial Lawyers of Minnesota (ACTLM) has awarded Judge Mark Vandelist the title of 2023 Distinguished Jurist. The recognition was announced during a ceremony held on Thursday night in St. Paul.
This accolade is given to recently retired judges who have demonstrated excellence in upholding the constitutional requirement for trial by jury, maintaining respect for the judicial process, appreciating trial lawyers' contributions, and promoting civility within the courtroom.
"ACTLM was pleased to recognize Judge Mark Vandelist as the 2023 Distinguished Jurist," stated ACTLM Executive Director Kristi Paulson. "We recognized him for his skills, knowledge, and dedication to the civil trial process; for his long-standing commitment to the jury system; and for his ethics, civility, and professionalism in the practice and on the bench."
Attorney Roger Kramer, who led this year's ACTLM award committee, noted that Vandelist received unanimous support from committee members. He emphasized Vandelist's intellect, civility, communication skills, and humility as key factors in their decision.
"I’ve known Mark for almost 30 years—he’s just a really good guy," Kramer remarked. "Everyone gives him the highest marks."
Judge Vandelist recently concluded his tenure as a judge in Scott County's First Judicial District. He expressed deep appreciation for receiving this honor at such a pivotal moment in his career.
"To be honored by ACTLM, who represent best civil trial lawyers in the state—it just means so much," he commented. "I am blown away that I’m even considered in the same breath with those who have previously won this award."
Appointed to the bench by Governor Mark Dayton in December 2013, Judge Vandelist holds an undergraduate degree from American University in Washington D.C., and a J.D. from Mitchell Hamline School of Law.
