Minnesota residents now have the option to submit proof of insurance electronically, following a decision by the Minnesota Court Payment Center to make this service permanent. This change applies to individuals charged with No Proof of Insurance or No Insurance, provided their vehicle was insured at the time of the offense.

The electronic submission process was initially tested through a pilot program last year. According to Rebecca Becker, Court Payment Center Manager, "We really didn’t publicize the electronic proof of insurance option during the pilot period, so we were pleasantly surprised to see that so many people used it." The trial saw 40% of submissions made online, leading to its permanent adoption.

To submit proof of insurance online, users should visit the Pay Fines page on mncourts.gov and follow specific instructions under the "How do I show proof of insurance?" tab. A confirmation email will be sent after submitting an email web form, allowing users to reply with an electronic copy of their insurance document.

The initiative for electronic submissions arose from customer feedback collected through periodic surveys conducted by the Minnesota Judicial Branch. Becker noted that "customers told us they wanted more self-service options," prompting efforts to create a process that is "simple, secure, and speedy."
