Cupid will visit the Minnesota Judicial Branch this Valentine's Day, as judges in three counties are set to perform free weddings on February 14. Ramsey County District Court in St. Paul plans to have eight judges available over the noon hour for these ceremonies. This marks the first year that Ramsey County is participating in multiple Valentine’s Day weddings.
"We saw the positive impact Hennepin County’s Valentine’s Day weddings had on the community and wanted to extend the same opportunity," said Ramsey County Judge Sophia Vuelo. "It’s a wonderful way to deepen humanity and celebrate Valentine’s Day, as well as remind people in Ramsey County and throughout our state that the court system is here for them."
Hennepin County District Court has traditionally performed weddings on Valentine's Day and will continue this tradition, though all 24 of its slots are currently filled. Meanwhile, Ramsey County will conduct 32 weddings during the noon hour with many slots still open.
In St. Louis County, one judge will be available at the District Court in Duluth for couples wishing to marry on Valentine's Day. Similarly, Judge Michelle Anderson at St. Louis County District Court in Virginia will also officiate marriages on February 14.
"Performing weddings is one of the highlights of my job," Judge Anderson said. "Valentine’s Day gives me an opportunity to share in the joy of couples in my area."
Couples do not need to reside in the county where they plan to marry but must have a valid marriage license from that county before a wedding can take place.
To wed on Valentine's Day, couples must complete a registration form and possess a valid marriage license from the Ramsey County Vital Records Office. For those marrying in St. Louis County, obtaining a marriage license from there is necessary along with scheduling an appointment by calling (218) 221-7682 for Duluth or (218) 305-7039 for Virginia.
