The Minnesota Court of Appeals is marking its 40th anniversary with a series of events aimed at celebrating the milestone and educating the public about its role. The court, which began operations in November 1983, handles approximately 2,000 appeals annually from district court decisions and administrative agencies. Exceptions include first-degree murder, tax, and worker’s compensation cases.
A reunion for past and present staff, clerks, and judges will take place on October 5 at the Landmark Center. On October 17, Chief Judge Susan Segal will join Judges Lucinda Jesson (retired) and Francis Connolly to reenact the first case argued before the court: Evans v. Blesi. This event will be moderated by Cindy Lehr, with retired Judge Marianne Short and attorney Mark Bradford presenting arguments.
A symposium on November 2 at the University of St. Thomas Law School will feature discussions on the future of appellate courts and their roles within state constitutions. Notable speakers include Chief Justice Natalie Hudson of the Minnesota Supreme Court and Don Verrilli, former United States Solicitor General.
On November 21, a three-judge panel will conduct oral arguments at Waseca High School for students. Additionally, an online display by the Minnesota State Law Library provides a comprehensive history of the court.
As part of these celebrations, events have also been held in Steele, Ottertail, and St. Louis counties.
More information about these activities can be found on the Court of Appeals webpage.
