Maryland Court of Appeals Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera recently visited St. Mary's and Calvert County courts as part of her ongoing statewide tour. Her visit included meetings with judges and court personnel, aimed at understanding the needs and challenges faced by the state's judicial system.
“It’s very helpful to be able to talk face-to-face,” Chief Judge Barbera stated. She expressed gratitude towards her fellow judges for accommodating these meetings within their busy schedules.
Appointed by Governor Martin O'Malley in July, Chief Judge Barbera has prioritized visiting Circuit and District Courts across Maryland. “It’s an opportunity to learn first-hand about what our courts need to provide fair, timely, and easy access to justice here and all over Maryland,” she said.
St. Mary's County Circuit Judge Karen H. Abrams highlighted the significance of the visit: “It was a pleasure to welcome Chief Judge Barbera, State Court Administrator Pam Harris, and Judge Barbera’s law clerk... We look forward to a productive relationship with Judge Barbera.”
Chief Judge Barbera identified several issues during her visits, including aging facilities and outdated technologies. Calvert County Circuit Judge Marjorie L. Clagett noted that their county is experiencing rapid growth, which has increased judicial filings and strained resources. “We are proud to be part of a network whose entire judiciary and excellent staff aim to serve our citizens,” she said.
The chief judge's tour will continue next month with a planned visit to Charles County.
