The Maryland Judiciary is set to advance to Phase V of its operations plan on March 7, marking the resumption of jury trials in both criminal and civil cases. As part of this phase, mask-wearing will become optional for judges, court employees, and visitors. However, unvaccinated individuals are still encouraged to wear masks. Entrance screening and other health measures will no longer be required.
An administrative order from Maryland Court of Appeals Chief Judge Joseph M. Getty, titled the Fifth Amended Administrative Order Expanding Statewide Judiciary Operations in Light of the COVID-19 Emergency, will take effect on March 7. This order rescinds previous directives.
Administrative judges from circuit courts and the District Court in each county and Baltimore City have the authority to implement health measures based on local conditions or mandates. Individuals uncertain about local requirements should reach out to their local clerk’s office for guidance.
The Maryland Judiciary continues adhering to guidelines from the Maryland Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) aimed at curbing COVID-19 transmission. Questions regarding jury service and accommodations can be directed to local jury offices.
