In Annapolis, Maryland, Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera of the Maryland Court of Appeals has announced a new administrative order aimed at addressing COVID-19 concerns. This measure requires judiciary staff to either show proof of vaccination against COVID-19 by September 27, 2021, or provide weekly negative test results if they are not vaccinated. This decision is in response to rising infection rates linked to the Delta variant.
Judge Barbera stated that these steps are vital for protecting judges, employees, and court visitors from COVID-19. "These are necessary measures to safeguard judges, employees, and court visitors from the spread of the COVID-19 virus and more contagious Delta variant to the greatest extent possible," she said. She noted that over half of the judiciary personnel have already been vaccinated and expressed confidence in their understanding of workplace safety's importance.
This order aligns with similar mandates from state judiciaries and broader government directives aimed at curbing transmission rates while ensuring public safety within judicial facilities.
