A new committee has been established by the Maryland Judiciary to enhance its commitment to equal justice. This initiative, led by Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera of the Maryland Court of Appeals, aims to address and dismantle discriminatory practices within the judicial system.
The Committee on Equal Justice is a part of the Judicial Council's governance structure and will focus on identifying necessary improvements and resources while developing educational opportunities for ongoing engagement in achieving equal justice. Chief Judge Barbera emphasized the importance of this effort, stating, “We are at a crossroads in meeting the mandate of equal justice under law.”
Judge E. Gregory Wells from the Maryland Court of Special Appeals will chair the committee, which includes over 40 members from various sectors within the Judiciary. Judge Wells expressed his commitment to this task: “I am honored that Chief Judge Barbera has asked me to lead this important and timely committee.”
The committee will work towards increasing awareness among judges and staff about ethnic disparities, discrimination, systemic racism, implicit bias, micro-inequities, and micro-aggressions. This announcement follows Chief Judge Barbera’s Statement on Equal Justice under Law.
Chief Judge Barbera reiterated the significance of this endeavor: “Judge Wells and the members of the Committee on Equal Justice have vital work before them.” The first meeting is scheduled to occur remotely in July.
