Maryland Court of Appeals Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera has appointed Judge Mark S. Chandlee as the county administrative judge of the Circuit Court for Calvert County, effective March 21. Judge Chandlee takes over from Judge E. Gregory Wells, who was recently appointed to the Court of Special Appeals by Governor Larry Hogan.
Judge Wells had served as the county administrative judge since March 1, succeeding Judge Marjorie L. Clagett, who retired after nearly seven years in the position on February 28. "Judge Wells has provided exemplary service to the Judiciary, the people of Calvert County, and the citizens of Maryland," stated Chief Judge Barbera. She added that she expects him to be a valuable addition to the appellate bench.
Judge Chandlee brings a strong background in management to his new role. "I am honored to have Chief Judge Barbera’s support and trust as I assume this new responsibility," he said. He expressed gratitude for having worked with Judges Wells and Clagett and aims to build upon their leadership examples.
The responsibilities of county administrative judges include overseeing court administration, budget management, procurement functions, and managing trial calendars for efficient case disposition.
Appointed to the Circuit Court for Calvert County in October 2013, Judge Chandlee also serves as presiding judge of the Calvert County Adult Treatment Court. His roles extend beyond this appointment; he is vice chair on several committees within Maryland's judicial system.
Judge Chandlee's legal career began after graduating from Frostburg State College in 1984 and earning his Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore School of Law. He has held various positions including assistant state’s attorney for Prince George’s County and partner at Zoglio & Chandlee.
Reflecting on his successor's capabilities, Judge Wells remarked, "I have known Judge Chandlee for many years. He is dedicated to our community and he is an astute jurist and effective manager." Former county administrative judge Marjorie L. Clagett praised both judges: "Our community is fortunate to have such talent on the bench with Judge Wells and Judge Chandlee."
