The Maryland Judiciary is inviting young artists to contribute their creativity to the 12th annual Conflict Resolution Day Student Bookmark Art Contest. The event encourages students from kindergarten through eighth grade across Maryland to use art as a medium for promoting peace and resolving conflicts. This initiative aligns with national Conflict Resolution Day, which will be observed on October 19, 2017.
Mary Ellen Barbera, Chief Judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals, stated, “We are inviting Maryland’s students to explore a variety of ways to resolve conflicts peacefully and to communicate their ideas through their art.” She emphasized that the artwork can foster peer-to-peer discussions about peaceful conflict resolution.
The contest is organized by the Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO) under the Maryland Judiciary. Since its inception in 2005, it has gained popularity among students. Last year saw participation from over 2,100 students statewide, resulting in 15 winning bookmarks and 64 honorable mentions.
Participants are encouraged to create bookmarks focusing on themes such as peer mediation, respectful dialogue, problem-solving together, tolerance, building peace, and non-violent alternatives. Submissions will be evaluated based on creativity and message conveyed. Prizes include $75 for first place, $50 for second place, and $25 for third place across three age categories: grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8.
Winners will have their work printed as bookmarks distributed throughout Maryland. Additionally, prize recipients will be honored at a ceremony at the Judicial College Education and Conference Center in Annapolis on December 5. Chief Judge Barbera will present awards during this event.
Entries must be submitted by October 19—Conflict Resolution Day—and should adhere to specified size guidelines without folding. Further details are available on MACRO's website or by contacting Alecia Parker.
