Washington County students recently participated in a Civics and Law Academy event at South Hagerstown High School. The session, held on December 14, brought together local judges, attorneys, and officials to discuss various aspects of law and society with the students.
During the two-hour session, topics such as juvenile rights, criminal law, free speech, law in the technology age, and career opportunities in law were explored. The aim of the Civics and Law Academy is to provide high school students with a deeper understanding of the law, how the U.S. government functions, and the roles individuals play within a democracy.
The Civics and Law Academy is organized through a partnership between the Maryland Judiciary, Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA), and the Citizenship and Law-Related Education Program (CLREP). For this particular event in Hagerstown, additional support came from the Washington County Bar Association and Washington County Public Schools.
