Maryland Court of Appeals Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera has announced that Judge Brett W. Wilson will assume the role of Administrative Judge for the First Judicial Circuit, effective January 1, 2017. This circuit includes Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester counties.
Judge Daniel M. Long, who currently holds the position, will retire on December 31, 2016. He expressed his gratitude for serving as Circuit Administrative Judge for two decades and endorsed Judge Wilson as a capable successor. "I have had the privilege of working with Judge Wilson for more than 12 years," said Judge Long. "Judge Wilson is an excellent leader who brings ample, proven skills to this new role."
Judge Wilson was appointed to the Circuit Court for Dorchester County in June 2004 by then-Governor Robert Ehrlich and has served as County Administrative Judge since his appointment. His previous roles include assistant state’s attorney for Wicomico County and senior assistant state’s attorney for Caroline County. He also practiced privately and served as Standing Master (now Magistrate) for Domestic Relations and Juvenile Causes in Dorchester County before becoming a judge.
Upon accepting his new position, Judge Wilson stated: “I am honored that Chief Judge Barbera has confidence in me to the extent that she has entrusted me with this opportunity to serve.” He acknowledged the challenge of succeeding Judge Long but expressed enthusiasm about contributing to judicial services.
Chief Judge Barbera praised both judges: “We are grateful to Judge Long for his outstanding service...and for his commitment to justice." She also noted that "Judge Wilson brings leadership skills and management experience that will be invaluable."
The Maryland Judiciary remains dedicated to advancing justice efficiently and transparently across its courts.
