Two Maryland high school mock trial teams are set to compete in the historic courtroom of the Maryland Court of Appeals. The event, scheduled for Friday, April 22, will see students presenting their cases before Judge Shirley M. Watts as part of the 2016 Mock Trial State Championship. The competition will be broadcast live via webcast starting at 10 a.m. on the Judiciary website.
On Thursday, April 21, Annapolis High School (Anne Arundel County), Baltimore City College High School (Baltimore City), DeMatha High School (Prince George’s County), and Franklin High School (Baltimore County) will participate in the semifinals at the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County in Annapolis. Judges Timothy E. Meredith and Douglas R.M. Nazarian from the Maryland Court of Special Appeals will preside over these rounds.
The Citizenship Law-Related Education Program (CLREP) sponsors this annual competition with support from the Maryland State Bar Association and the Maryland Judicial Conference. Throughout the year, high school teams engage in multiple local competitions before advancing to state-level events.
Since its inception in 1983, more than 54,000 students from across Maryland have taken part in this educational initiative aimed at fostering an understanding of law and advocacy skills among young participants.
