Maryland Court of Appeals Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera visited Worcester County on August 5, meeting with judges and court professionals at District Court locations in Snow Hill and Ocean City.
In Snow Hill, Chief Judge Barbera was welcomed by Worcester County District Judge Gerald V. Purnell, administrative judge for District 2. "Chief Judge Barbera has made it a goal to visit each court facility in the state," said Judge Purnell. He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to introduce her to his colleagues in Worcester County.
County Clerk Elnora “Peaches” Gibson noted that despite being a small court, they provide services comparable to larger jurisdictions. She appreciated Chief Judge Barbera's interest and personal engagement during her visit.
Following Snow Hill, Chief Judge Barbera proceeded to Ocean City where she met with Worcester County District Judge Daniel R. Mumford during a court recess and interacted with the court staff. "We have never had the chief judge of Maryland visit our court," said Judge Mumford, emphasizing the significance of her visit.
District Court Supervisor Christine Morris remarked on the honor of having Chief Judge Barbera present, highlighting her personal interaction as a sign of appreciation from the Judiciary's leadership.
Chief Judge Barbera praised the judges and staff in Worcester County as representatives of the Maryland Judiciary. "Today has provided me with an opportunity to get to know the people in Worcester County District Court who work so hard," she stated, expressing gratitude for their service.
Appointed by Governor Martin O’Malley last July, Chief Judge Barbera prioritizes visiting all Circuit and District Courts across Maryland.
