On December 2, judges from Maryland's courts will engage with high school students in Charles County to discuss legal topics. The event, part of the Civics and Law Academy, will take place at Thomas Stone High School in Waldorf. Approximately 120 students are expected to participate.

Chief Judge John P. Morrissey of the District Court of Maryland is set to be the plenary speaker. Topics for discussion include juvenile rights, criminal law, free speech, and the implications of technology on law.

Judge Pamila J. Brown from the District Court in Howard County remarked, "The students raise interesting points and ask great questions because we discuss issues that they deal with every day." She emphasized the importance of understanding legal issues for societal participation: "Students need to have an understanding of law and legal issues if they want to function in society."

The program is a collaborative effort involving the Maryland State Bar Association, Citizenship and Law-Related Education Program, American Bar Association, Charles County Public Schools, and Charles County Bar Association.

The Civics and Law Academy aims to enhance students' civic competence through sessions held during the school year across various locations in Maryland.
