More than 100 high school students from Anne Arundel County will participate in a courtroom learning experience on November 13. The event is part of the Schools in the Court program organized by the Anne Arundel County District Court. Students, accompanied by their teachers, will witness real criminal cases and learn about the consequences of legal offenses such as drunk driving.

Judge Shaem C.P. Spencer, who leads the program, stated: "Students will see defendants who are not much older than the students themselves. We want them to get an understanding of how the court system works, but we especially want them to understand how making wrong choices about things such as speeding, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, drug use and other crimes can deeply and adversely impact their lives."

The event aims to educate students from Arundel and Old Mill high schools about the legal system's workings and its implications on personal life decisions. The program also includes interactions with members of the Maryland State Police K-9 squad.

Transportation for participating students is funded by a grant from the Anne Arundel County Partnership for Children, Youth and Families. The Schools in the Court initiative takes place twice each school year.

The session is scheduled for Thursday, November 13, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., at Courtroom 1 of Anne Arundel County District Court located at 251 Rowe Boulevard in Annapolis.
