The Maryland Access to Justice Commission is seeking nominations for its fourth annual awards, aimed at recognizing individuals and programs that have significantly contributed to improving access to justice in the state's courts. The awards are open to judges, court staff, legislators, and other contributors who have made outstanding efforts in this area.
Established in 2008, the Maryland Access to Justice Commission focuses on enhancing access to the civil justice system for all residents of Maryland. This includes areas such as landlord-tenant disputes, small claims, debt collection, divorce, child custody issues, domestic violence cases, and other non-criminal matters. The commission is a coalition comprising representatives from Maryland courts, executive branch agencies employees, legislators, attorneys, social services members, faith groups members, and legal service providers.
Retired Court of Appeals Judge Irma S. Raker chairs the commission. She emphasized the importance of acknowledging those who make exceptional contributions: “Each year, Maryland’s courts handle more than two million cases,” she said. “Our courts have a huge impact on the lives of the people of Maryland and we want to salute those individuals who go beyond the usual call of duty to enhance the quality of justice for people who encounter barriers when they are dealing with the courts.”
Nominations are being accepted in five categories focused on advancing access to justice for low- and moderate-income residents of Maryland. Nomination forms can be found on the commission's website at www.mdcourts.gov/mdatjc/pdfs/awards/mdatjcawards2014packet.pdf. Completed forms should be emailed or mailed by July 1st.
