The Spirit Lake Tribal Court is currently seeking a qualified attorney to serve as the Adult Criminal Court Public Defender. This position is open to individual attorneys and law firms that can provide legal services through one or more attorneys.
The primary responsibilities include representing indigent Tribal members in criminal proceedings, advising defendants throughout all phases of their cases, drafting legal documents, and preparing testimony and arguments. The role also involves assisting in policy preparation and engaging with the Tribal Council or Spirit Lake Law and Order Committee when necessary.
Candidates must hold a J.D. degree from an accredited law school, be a member in good standing with any state bar or federal court, and be admitted or eligible for admission to practice in the Tribal Court. Competency in criminal procedure, trial advocacy, and knowledge of tribal legal issues are essential. The position requires high moral character, integrity, and no felony convictions or current disciplinary proceedings.
Preference will be given to applicants with at least one year of relevant experience as a practicing attorney. Strong communication skills, the ability to handle adversarial situations constructively, and a commitment to professional ethics are crucial for this role.
This non-employee contractor position offers compensation at $300 per case assignment. Interested individuals must submit a resume and writing sample, while law firms should provide a detailed proposal to the Spirit Lake Tribe Human Resources Department by mail or email.
Indian Preference applies according to Spirit Lake Tribe Policy, giving priority selection to eligible applicants. Veterans Preference is also applicable under the Spirit Lake Tribe Human Resource Department Policy for qualified candidates providing proof of eligibility.
