As National Veterans and Military Families Month is observed in November, the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) has expressed support for state and territory attorney general offices in their commitment to military families. The NAAG Veterans Affairs Committee focuses on protecting veterans by addressing exploitation, providing legal assistance related to deployments and military service, and ensuring access to veteran health benefits.

Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson, who co-chairs the Veterans Affairs Committee, emphasized the importance of supporting military families: “Our military and veteran families deserve not only our appreciation but our commitment to help them access the resources they deserve." He highlighted efforts in Washington through the Office of Military and Veteran Legal Assistance which connects veterans with volunteer legal aid. Ferguson stated that helping veterans is a non-partisan effort: "I am proud to partner with anyone willing to answer the call and help address the unmet legal needs of our nation’s heroes.”

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, also a co-chair of NAAG’s Veterans Affairs Committee, shared his perspective as a veteran: “As a veteran myself, who’s been in the National Guard for more than 28 years and was deployed to Iraq, I understand the sacrifices that families and veterans go through in service to our country."

This month serves as an acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by service members, veterans, and their families. It also highlights available resources for their support. Individuals are encouraged to explore these resources and contribute to the well-being of military families.

In Washington, services available include civil legal assistance through the Office of Military and Veteran Legal Assistance. More information can be found on NAAG’s Veterans and Military page.

The Washington Attorney General's Office provides various services including consumer protection enforcement and handling cases such as elder abuse across most counties in Washington. Further details are available at www.atg.wa.gov.

The National Association of Attorneys General is a nonpartisan organization representing attorneys general from all states, territories, and D.C., promoting collaboration on legal issues.
