Attorney General Gentner Drummond has issued a warning to Oklahoma residents about the potential for contractor fraud following severe weather events over the weekend. He noted that periods after storms and tornadoes are often when fraudulent activities increase, targeting those with storm-related property damage.
“Even though it’s tempting to move quickly after sustaining property damage, Oklahomans should carefully research businesses and contractors before hiring them,” Drummond advised. “Staying alert and using good discretion when choosing a contractor or construction company are vitally important.”
The declaration of a State of Emergency covers six counties. Agents from the Office of the Attorney General will be present in these areas to post notices and educate residents on how to avoid scams.
To help prevent falling victim to contractor fraud, several tips have been provided:
- Ask for referrals from people you know and trust.
- Interview multiple contractors and take time to review your options.
- Obtain written proposals that cover all aspects of the project.
- Be cautious if asked for a substantial up-front payment or cash payment.
- Use a local company established in the community.
Residents can contact the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Unit for information on complaints against contractors or to file their own complaint by calling 1-833-681-1895.
