The Michigan Supreme Court is set to hold oral arguments in the case of People of MI v Evan Andrew Oslund, Case No. 165544, at Southwestern Michigan College's Dale A. Lyons Theatre on April 24, 2024. This event marks the 29th instance of the Court traveling to a different location as part of its "Court Community Connections" program aimed at educating high school students.
In addition to hearing oral arguments, the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians will conduct a Drum Ceremony as part of a community activity. Supreme Court Chief Commissioner Daniel C. Brubaker will lead briefing and debriefing sessions before and after the proceedings.
This session will be attended by justices from the Michigan Supreme Court, Cass County Judges, and judges from the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Tribal Court. Students from Buchanan High School, Calvary Bible Academy, Dowagiac High School, Marcellus High School, Volinia High School, and Southwestern Michigan College are invited to participate.
Oral arguments are scheduled to start promptly at 10:00 a.m., with proceedings beginning at approximately 9:30 a.m. Following the arguments and debriefing session, students will have an opportunity for interaction with the Justices during a reception.
The public can view live streaming of the oral arguments online; however, audio will only be available when justices are present on the bench. For those interested in attending or covering the event as media representatives should coordinate with Ravynne Gilmore for arrangements.
Media personnel must arrive by 9:15 a.m., with restrictions on certain items such as backpacks and electronic devices inside the courtroom. Cell phones are permitted but must remain off during proceedings.
