Attorney General Todd Rokita has issued a warning to Indiana families about cyber kidnapping schemes that have recently emerged in the United States. These scams involve false ransom threats and are primarily aimed at students traveling overseas.

"This type of attack largely targets our students as they travel overseas," said Attorney General Rokita. "These malicious scammers are willing to dupe and terrify families as they create a false kidnapping heist – all to convince them to hand over their hard-earned money."

Cyber kidnappers trick victims into paying a ransom by making them believe a loved one is in danger. The perpetrators use photos of individuals alone in secluded areas to create the illusion of an abduction, prompting family members or friends to send money urgently.

The FBI notes that these cases are challenging to investigate because the calls often originate from outside the country. This crime typically occurs when family members cannot track or contact the person supposedly kidnapped.

"Do not hesitate to contact our office if you suspect or witness this type of crime," urged Attorney General Rokita. "Our Consumer Protection Division is dedicated to helping Hoosiers when they're faced with these devastating situations. When your loved one is being threatened, it is your natural instinct to jump to their aid, but we also need to be informed of the newest scams."

To protect against such scams, several precautions are advised: be wary of calls from unfamiliar area codes, especially those from Puerto Rico; avoid engaging with callers who do not use the alleged victim's phone; and be cautious if asked for ransom payments via wire transfer services.

If contacted by someone demanding ransom, individuals should try slowing down the situation by asking specific questions about the victim or requesting direct communication with them. It's also recommended to attempt contacting the alleged victim through other means while staying on the line with supposed kidnappers.

At any sign of such activity, notifying local law enforcement is crucial.
