Attorney General Chris Carr announced the conviction of Anthony Charles Holmes, 33, from Cleveland, Ohio, for human trafficking after transporting a 16-year-old girl from South Carolina to Atlanta for commercial sex acts. The victim was found on August 2, 2023, following a traffic stop by the Greene County Sheriff's Office. A Greene County jury found Holmes guilty on October 21, 2024, after a five-day trial. Charges included Trafficking of Persons for Sexual Servitude and Trafficking in Cocaine. Sentencing is scheduled for November 13, 2024.
Jameesha Harris, a co-defendant who helped transport the victim for commercial sex purposes, had previously pleaded guilty to human trafficking and other charges.
"Thanks to the leadership of our Governor and First Lady, law enforcement officers in Georgia are more equipped than ever before to identify the signs of human trafficking," said Carr. "We’re grateful for our partnership with District Attorney Wright Barksdale, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, the Taliaferro County Sheriff’s Office and GBI."
The case was prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Maggie Meetze and investigated by several agencies including the Greene County Sheriff's Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation's (GBI) Human Exploitation and Trafficking Unit.
"The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is diligently working to protect victims," stated Greene County Sheriff Donnie Harrison. Taliaferro County Sheriff Tia McWilliams added that their office takes pride in knowing another victim is safe. GBI Director Chris Hosey emphasized that "human trafficking will not be tolerated in the State of Georgia."
On August 2, 2023, during highway interdiction efforts near Greensboro, a deputy observed a white Cadillac sedan improperly stopping at an intersection. Holmes drove the vehicle with Harris and the teenage girl as passengers. After attempting to flee from law enforcement across county lines into Taliaferro County, Holmes was stopped with assistance from local authorities.
During subsequent investigations by law enforcement agencies involved in this case, authorities discovered drugs and firearms inside Holmes' vehicle.
Holmes was indicted on October 31, 2023. His charges include multiple counts related to drug possession and firearm violations alongside fleeing from police officers.
Harris received her sentence earlier this year after being convicted on April 8th; she faces imprisonment followed by probationary measures while also registering as a sex offender due to her role within these crimes involving sexual servitude alongside cocaine distribution activities too.
This case marks another successful prosecution led under Attorney General Carr's statewide Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit established back in 2019 which has secured numerous convictions thus far whilst aiding countless children affected adversely through such criminal activities throughout Georgia itself today now too still ongoing always forward moving positively ahead every day onwards
