The Vermont Supreme Court is set to conduct oral arguments in three cases at Rutland High School on October 24, 2024. This event is part of the Court's "On the Road" initiative, which aims to bring the judicial process closer to students by holding proceedings outside its usual venue in Montpelier.
For this occasion, the Rutland High School Encore Theatre will be converted into a courtroom. Students and teachers will have the chance to witness appellate procedures firsthand, with each side having fifteen minutes to present their case. The cases involve appeals related to aggravated assault, school records on physical restraint, and a permit denial for a dog rescue operation.
Chief Justice Paul Reiber expressed enthusiasm about engaging with students during this event. "We are honored to bring the work of the Vermont Supreme Court to Rutland High School," he stated. He added that he hopes this experience will inspire some students towards public service or legal careers.
Rutland High School Principal Greg Schillinger highlighted the educational benefits of such an event. "Every graduate of RHS takes Civics and this is a real-world example of civics in action," he noted. He emphasized that observing the judicial system serves as an important reminder of civic engagement, especially as elections approach.
Students will also have a chance to interact with the Justices during a Q&A session and over lunch. The public can attend the hearings starting at 9:30 a.m., though they must adhere to court etiquette and undergo security screening upon arrival.
