Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit has played a crucial role in solving a homicide case from 2014 in Texarkana. This collaboration with the Texarkana Police Department resulted in the arrest of Cameron Cheatham, aged 27, for the murder of Xavier Rollins.
The incident occurred on June 17, 2014, when Rollins was found shot dead outside his apartment on College Drive in Texarkana. Despite conducting numerous witness interviews and performing DNA testing on evidence collected at the scene, the case remained unsolved for years. In March 2024, Texarkana police sought assistance from Paxton’s unit for forensic testing.
Throughout the investigation in 2024, the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) worked closely with Texarkana detectives. The OAG provided resources such as expedited forensic testing and aid in locating and arresting the suspect.
Attorney General Paxton initiated the Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit in 2021 to support local law enforcement agencies with unsolved cases. In 2023, this unit received a federal grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance to address cold cases with DNA profiles that have not been matched to suspects. The grant enables free forensic testing for police departments across Texas and funds a full-time investigator to assist with investigations under its terms.
