The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) has concluded Operation Nazare Wave, targeting violent crime in Washington, D.C., and the National Capital Region. Conducted by the USMS’ Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force (CARFTF) from April to September, the operation led to the arrest of 826 fugitives, including 63 for homicide. Additionally, 54 firearms were recovered and seized, alongside 6.4 kg of narcotics and $1,115,365 in cash.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland commented on the operation's success: “This successful operation reflects the collaborative approach the Justice Department has taken to turn the tide against violent crime.” He acknowledged the involvement of over 30 law enforcement agencies in Washington, D.C., which contributed to these significant results.

USMS Director Ronald L. Davis expressed gratitude for the dedication shown by all participants: “I wish to thank all of the Deputies, Task Force Officers, and participating agencies for their steadfast commitment and tremendous work.” Davis highlighted that this initiative coincided with Operation North Star FY2024 across ten other metropolitan areas.

Operation Nazare Wave extended its reach beyond local borders, resulting in arrests across 19 districts nationwide and internationally. Some fugitives evaded capture by moving between districts within and outside Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C., but were eventually apprehended.

Key arrests included:

- On July 31, Rakeem Gilgeours was captured in Miami after being deported from Guyana. He was involved in a July 4 shooting at Temple Hills Park in Maryland.

- On June 1, Emmanuel Sewell was arrested in West Virginia with CARFTF's assistance. Sewell was wanted for his involvement in the death of Maryland Parole Officer David Martinez.

- On April 29, a juvenile suspect was arrested in Suitland, Maryland for attempted murder following an incident at Greenbelt Park.

Participating agencies ranged from local police departments to federal entities like Homeland Security Investigations and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
