Following the EF2 tornado that struck parts of Slidell last Wednesday, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has issued a warning to residents about potential roofing scams. She emphasized the importance of vigilance when hiring contractors for storm damage repairs.

"People in Slidell were hit hard by a tornado last week. While citizens are rebuilding their homes and lives, they need to be on alert for scammers and untrustworthy contractors, and that includes hiring the right roofer if you have storm damage. My team wants you to be prepared before hiring someone to do work on your home," said Attorney General Liz Murrill.

The Public Protection Division has provided several tips for hiring a roofer:

- Look for local contractors with good reputations who have been in business in the area for many years. Avoid "storm chasers" from out of state offering cheap, quick fixes. Verify their local address and ask for references.

- Ensure the contractor is licensed and bonded.

- Obtain written quotes and consider at least three options.

- Be cautious of contractors requesting upfront payments. Reputable ones will not demand large down payments. Avoid paying in cash; use checks or credit cards to allow dispute options if necessary.

- Be wary of door-to-door solicitors.

- Do not trust claims of leftover shingles or materials.

- Secure a written contract and read it thoroughly before signing.

- Resist high-pressure sales tactics; reputable companies will not pressure you.

Attorney General Liz Murrill also encourages anyone suspecting fraud to report it to the National Center for Disaster Fraud by calling 1-866-720-5721.
