Following the severe storms and tornadoes that swept across Louisiana on April 10, Attorney General Liz Murrill has issued a warning to consumers about potential home repair scams and other fraudulent activities. Her office aims to ensure that those affected by the natural disaster receive necessary services without falling victim to fraud.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the people who have suffered because of the severe storms yesterday. It’s sad that times like this often attract scammers and people who are looking to prey on innocent people following a disaster. My team and I want to make sure everyone is educated on contractor fraud, fake officials, and other criminal activity that could happen following a natural disaster," said Attorney General Liz Murrill.

Attorney General Murrill provided several consumer tips for natural disaster victims:

- Take photographs of your contractor, their vehicle, license plate, and credentials.

- Obtain multiple estimates for work needed, ensuring each bid covers the same scope of work in detail.

- Avoid agreeing to large down payments; reputable contractors typically do not require more than 25% upfront.

- Ensure all agreements are documented in writing, including any changes, which should be initialed by both parties.

- Verify credentials as some con artists may impersonate government officials or insurance adjusters.

- Confirm the legitimacy of companies through resources like the Better Business Bureau at www.BBB.org.

- Be cautious with charities that emerge immediately after a disaster.

- Use checks or money orders for payments rather than cash and retain receipts.

The Attorney General also encourages anyone suspecting fraud to report it to the National Center for Disaster Fraud by calling 1-866-720-5721.
