Attorney General William Tong has reached a $20,000 settlement with EnergyBillCruncher.com following an investigation into misleading claims made on social media. The company, which acts as a referral service for solar installers, had shared 1,456 inquiries from Connecticut consumers with various installers.

EnergyBillCruncher's advertisements falsely claimed that the "government will cover the cost to install solar," improperly used the Connecticut state seal, and created urgency by stating homeowners must "do this before Friday." However, the Connecticut state government does not endorse any specific solar company or program. While some installations may have no initial cost and tax credits could be available, there is no free solar system. Costs and benefits vary for each homeowner, necessitating thorough research by consumers.

As part of the settlement, EnergyBillCruncher will cease its misleading marketing practices, including false deadlines and misuse of the state seal. The company is also required to inform each contracted solar company of these terms.

"We’re forcing EnergyBillCruncher to end their misleading ads, which lured hundreds of consumers with false promises and fake deadlines," stated Attorney General Tong. He emphasized that while solar can be a viable option for controlling energy costs, it is not free nor suitable for every home. Accurate information and ample time for research are crucial for consumers.

This settlement follows other actions taken by Attorney General Tong against unfair sales tactics in the solar industry. Recently, a Hartford Superior Court judge imposed a $5 million judgment against Vision Solar due to high-pressure sales tactics and misrepresentations. Vision Solar's bankruptcy status means they lack sufficient assets to pay this judgment.

Additionally, Attorney General Tong has filed lawsuits against SunRun Inc., Bright Planet Solar Inc., Elevate Solar Solutions LLC, and individual salespeople Dakota Grumet and Sierra Howes for alleged deceptive practices in selling solar panel systems. In 2022, an investigation led to enforcement action against Solar Wolf Energy over incomplete or uninitiated work; as a result, Solar Wolf is currently prohibited from operating in Connecticut and has declared bankruptcy.
