Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco attended the G7 Interior Ministers Meeting in Mirabella Eclano, Italy, on October 3-4. During the meeting, she emphasized the significance of international cooperation in maintaining the rule of law and addressing global threats.
Monaco described the current threat landscape as diverse and fueled by international conflicts and disruptive technologies like cyber and AI. She urged unity against threats from nations such as Russia, Iran, and China, which seek to exert influence through transnational repression and malicious activities.
The Deputy AG committed to enhancing international collaboration against terrorism, cyber threats, and synthetic drugs like fentanyl. She outlined the Justice Department's efforts to disrupt cybercriminals and tackle all facets of the fentanyl supply chain globally.
Ahead of the anniversary of Hamas’s attacks in Israel, Monaco and her counterparts condemned terrorism in all forms. They pledged to continue sharing information to prevent acts of terror worldwide.
In a virtual meeting with Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, they reaffirmed support for Ukraine against Russian aggression. Monaco highlighted ongoing efforts to cut off funding for Russia's war machine and announced new initiatives to help Ukraine strengthen its legal system.
The discussions also covered frameworks for using AI responsibly while mitigating its risks. Monaco noted that AI is transforming crime methods, including intensifying cyberattacks and fraud.
On the sidelines of the G7 Ministerial, Monaco held bilateral meetings with several officials including UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Canadian Minister Dominic Leblanc. She reiterated the Justice Department's commitment to partnerships that uphold democracy globally.
