The Justice Department has released a statement on the anniversary of the October 7 attacks in Israel by Hamas. The attacks, which occurred one year ago, resulted in the deaths of nearly 1,200 people, including over 40 Americans. Hundreds of civilians were also kidnapped during what has been described as the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.
Attorney General Merrick B. Garland stated, “Monday, October 7 will mark one year since Hamas terrorists murdered nearly 1,200 people, including more than 40 Americans, kidnapped hundreds of civilians, and perpetrated the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust."
Garland emphasized that charges have been unsealed against Yahya Sinwar and other senior leaders of Hamas. He affirmed that the Justice Department is dedicated to pursuing those responsible for murdering Americans and those who provide material support to them. "We are targeting every aspect of Hamas’s operations, and our work is far from over," he added.
The statement also addressed an increase in threats against Jewish, Muslim, Arab, and Palestinian communities in the United States following last year's attacks. Garland said that the Justice Department has responded forcefully to these threats and will not tolerate unlawful acts fueled by hatred.
He acknowledged that this anniversary coincides with millions of Jewish Americans observing the High Holidays. The Justice Department reaffirms its commitment to ensuring safety for Jews in America. Garland concluded by stating: "No person and no community should have to live in fear of hate-fueled violence, and the Justice Department will aggressively investigate and prosecute criminal acts and threats of hate whenever and wherever they occur.”
