A Pennsylvania State Trooper, Michael J. Brown, has been sentenced to six to 23 months in prison following his conviction for vehicular homicide. The sentencing took place in Tioga County Court, with Brown expected to begin his prison term on November 1. In addition to the prison sentence, he has been ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and over $4,000 in restitution for funeral expenses.
The incident occurred last year when Brown was off-duty and driving on Route 6 in Sullivan Township. While attempting to pass another vehicle, Brown's Jeep crossed double yellow lines and collided with an oncoming car driven by Christine Woodward, resulting in her death.
Attorney General Michelle Henry commented on the case: "No one is above the law, including those sworn to uphold it. The defendant’s reckless actions led to the tragic death of a devoted mother and teacher. Nothing can bring her back to those who so dearly loved her." She emphasized that this case should serve as a warning for drivers who endanger others by speeding.
Brown was convicted by a jury in May of homicide by vehicle. Following the verdict, he was also found guilty of three summary traffic violations. The prosecution team included Senior Deputy Attorney General Christopher Phillips, Deputy Attorney General Philip McCarthy, and Senior Deputy Attorney General Tracy Piatkowski.
