Attorney General William Tong has issued a statement in response to Yankee Gas's upcoming request for a $209 million rate hike. This increase, if approved by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, would result in an average 29 percent rise in customer bills. Yankee Gas, owned by Eversource, serves 252,000 customers across 85 towns in Connecticut.
In his statement, Attorney General Tong expressed concern about the timing of the proposed increase. "This massive rate hike request could not come at a worse time for Connecticut who are already struggling to afford these skyrocketing utility bills," he said. He further emphasized his commitment to scrutinizing the request thoroughly and ensuring that consumers do not pay more than necessary: "I’m going to comb through every line of this request the moment it is filed, and I’ll be fighting at every step of the way to make sure no one pays a penny more than absolutely necessary."
