Judge Benny A. Graff remembered for dedication to law and family

Benny Alan Graff passed away on September 26, 2024, with his two children by his side. He was known as a dedicated father, a loyal friend, and a fair and compassionate servant to the state of North Dakota throughout his 85 years.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Friday, October 4, 2024, at Parkway Funeral Service in Bismarck. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday at Parkway Funeral Service, followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will take place at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.

Born on October 14, 1938, in Hibbing, MN to Paul and Rose (Post) Graff, Benny grew up with his sister in the Iron Range area. He graduated from Hibbing High School and continued his education at the University of North Dakota where he earned an undergraduate degree before graduating from law school in 1964. During this period, he also served in the U.S. Air Force in the Air National Guard.

Benny began his legal career in private practice and later worked as a corporate lawyer in Racine, WI. He also served as Assistant Counsel for the U.S. Senate Subcommittee for Judicial Improvement in Washington, DC. His passion for law and people found its home when Governor Art Link appointed him District Judge.

For over three decades, Benny's voice resonated through the halls of Burleigh County Courthouse where he was known for his no-nonsense approach but also recognized for being fair and compassionate in sentencing.

Outside of work, Benny enjoyed golfing and was an avid sports fan particularly of the Vikings, Twins, UND hockey team along with the Wild and Timberwolves. Family and friends were central to his life; he cherished spending time with them.

He had a quick wit and great sense of humor which made him willing to discuss or debate various topics including current events, politics, pop culture, and movies. His love for music concerts and traveling highlighted his zest for life which will be missed by many.

Benny is survived by his children Heidi (Skip) Hollowell of Columbus OH; Jason (Kaaren) Graff of Cincinnati OH; step-children Angela Mellon; Terri Mellon; Jay (Jill) Mellon; grandchildren Erin; Sean (Rachel); Zara; Zayla; step-grandchildren Mamie; Ewan; Henry; Medora; Julian; Joshua.

He was preceded in death by his wife Kay; parents Paul and Rose Graff; sister Elaine (Johnny) Scipioni.
