Arkansas Supreme Court dismisses driver’s license gender ID lawsuit

The Arkansas Supreme Court has dismissed a lawsuit challenging the state's emergency rule on driver’s license gender identification. The order was issued in the case of Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration v. Gallagher.

Attorney General Tim Griffin expressed his satisfaction with the court's decision, stating, "I am pleased that the Arkansas Supreme Court granted my motion to dismiss this lawsuit against the Department of Finance and Administration, which has brought its driver’s license gender identification rule into compliance with the law. The Department’s rule must comply with state law, therefore, today’s order is a win for the rule of law."

Griffin also commended Solicitor General Nicholas Bronni and Deputy Solicitor General Dylan Jacobs for their efforts in securing this outcome.

Tim Griffin assumed office as Arkansas's 57th Attorney General on January 10, 2023. He previously served as the state's 20th Lieutenant Governor from 2015-2023 and represented Arkansas's Second Congressional District from 2011-2015. During his tenure in Congress, he served on multiple committees including Ways and Means, Armed Services, Foreign Affairs, Ethics, and Judiciary.

Griffin has over 28 years of service in the U.S. Army Reserve Judge Advocate General’s Corps and currently holds the rank of colonel. His military career includes active duty as an Army prosecutor at Fort Campbell and service with the 101st Airborne Division in Iraq.

In addition to his military career, Griffin has held various positions including U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas and Special Assistant to President George W. Bush.

A graduate of Magnolia High School, Hendrix College, Tulane Law School, and Oxford University graduate school attendee, Griffin resides in Little Rock with his wife Elizabeth and their three children.
