Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals has upheld the conviction of Henry Joiner, 62, for murder. Joiner was convicted in the Montgomery County Circuit Court on November 10, 2022.
The trial evidence indicated that on May 29, 2020, Louis Miles was staying at the Destiny Inn in Montgomery. Witnesses reported hearing an angry phone call received by Miles, who then asked a neighbor to retrieve a rifle. Shortly after, Joiner arrived in his car, approached Miles, assaulted him, and shot him multiple times before leaving the scene.
Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey’s office prosecuted the case and secured a guilty verdict. Joiner was sentenced to ninety-nine years in prison. He appealed to have his conviction overturned.
The Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Division managed the case during the appeals process and argued for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm Joiner's conviction. The court issued its decision on Friday, September 20, 2024.
Attorney General Marshall praised Assistant Attorney General Christopher D. Howell for his work on this case and expressed gratitude to District Attorney Daryl Bailey and his staff for their assistance in upholding the murder conviction.
