LANSING, MI, September 10, 2024 – The Michigan Supreme Court (MSC) has issued a resolution marking September 11-17 as Michigan Patriot Week. Co-founded in 2009 by Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren and his daughter, Leah, Patriot Week takes place within the anchor dates of September 11 (anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks) and September 17 (Constitution Day).
“I am thankful to Mike and Leah for working so hard to make sure we never forget those who lost their lives on 9/11, and at the same time, reminding us of what brings us together as Americans,” said Chief Justice Elizabeth T. Clement. “Focusing on our founding principles can help us solve problems and find common ground.”
Inspired by Kwanzaa's model in which each day is dedicated to a specific principle, Patriot Week is a nonpartisan effort to unite Americans behind the founding First Principles articulated in the Declaration of Independence and embedded in the United States Constitution.
Constitution Day is a federal observance designed to commemorate the creation and signing of the supreme law of the land and to honor and celebrate the privileges and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship. Federal law requires that all schools receiving federal funds hold an educational program for their students on or near September 17 each year. The MSC Learning Center annually coordinates Constitution Day events and resources, including tours, videos, an educator guide, and more.
