The Supreme Court of Georgia will honor the Hon. Robert C. I. McBurney for his years of service as Presiding Officer of the Judicial Qualifications Commission Hearing Panel.

Chief Justice Michael P. Boggs will present Judge McBurney with the Court’s Amicus Curiae award at the beginning of the oral argument session on August 21, 2024. The Amicus Curiae (Latin for “friend of the court”) is one of the most prestigious awards bestowed by the state’s highest court on judges, attorneys, and others who have provided exceptional service to Georgia’s judicial system and citizens.

Judge McBurney, who sits on the Atlanta Judicial Circuit Superior Court bench, had served as the Presiding Officer of the Hearing Panel since his appointment by the Supreme Court in 2017. He took on this role immediately following the restructuring of the JQC.

The Court has appointed Georgia Court of Appeals Judge Brian Rickman as the new Hearing Panel Presiding Officer for a three-year term, which began August 6, 2024.

Media are welcome to cover the award presentation. Any media planning to photograph, video, or broadcast the event should complete a request form online. The event also will be live-streamed on the Court website at gasupreme.us.
