Tom Trujillo has become McGuireWoods’ Chief Innovation and AI Officer, effective July 22, 2024. In his new role, Trujillo manages the development and deployment of business solutions, including the use of AI-enhanced tools, to better serve clients and improve firm operations.

Trujillo also joins McGuireWoods’ Technology Committee, which includes lawyers and business professionals who oversee the selection and implementation of business solutions and technology applications.

Trujillo continues to serve as director of MWAccel, a cutting-edge client service initiative that helps corporate law departments address complicated legal operations and business issues, while adding value to McGuireWoods’ key client relationships. Launched in 2021, MWAccel leverages the skills and combined knowledge of lawyers, consultants and data scientists/engineers to help clients implement solutions across legal operations areas.

A cum laude graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, Trujillo worked in the legal departments at General Motors and Ford Motor Co. in Detroit, then at Bank of America and Wells Fargo in Charlotte, before joining McGuireWoods to launch MWAccel.

“As director of MWAccel, Tom harnesses the collective knowledge of our lawyers and consultants to help our clients address challenging issues,” said managing partner J. Tracy Walker IV. “He will bring that same approach to his new role, keeping McGuireWoods at the forefront of innovation in the legal industry.”

Said Trujillo: “I have enjoyed working with our lawyers, consultants and business professionals to deliver creative solutions for clients, and I look forward to building on those successes in this new position.”

Trujillo succeeds Peter Geovanes, who is leaving the firm. During Geovanes’ tenure, McGuireWoods entered into an agreement to utilize CoCounsel, a first-of-its-kind AI legal assistant developed by Casetext and powered by OpenAI’s latest and most advanced large language model, GPT-4. The firm continues developing and testing uses of CoCounsel and other AI-powered tools.

“Peter helped us lay the foundation for integrating AI in a responsible and effective way,” Walker said. “We thank Peter for his contributions and wish him well as he begins a new chapter.”
