TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—To initiate the 2024 Summer Scam Series: Sunny Days and Shady Deals edition, Attorney General Ashley Moody is alerting Floridians about prevalent online shopping scams. During the summer, many online retailers offer special sales with attractive deals and discounts. Scammers may establish imposter websites to mimic these retailers and target consumers with malware and phishing texts designed to steal sensitive information. Attorney General Moody’s "Scams at a Glance: E-Commerce Cons" resource provides information and tips to help Floridians safely navigate summer sales events.

Attorney General Ashley Moody stated, “Online retailers often offer summer specials. This can create a flood of online traffic, and whenever money is being spent, scammers are there for a piece of the action. We are launching our 2024 Summer Scams Series with a warning about these scams and how to avoid them.”

Attorney General Moody’s "Scams at a Glance: E-Commerce Cons" offers insights into common online shopping schemes that may be on the rise this summer. The resource includes the following tips:

- Ensure online shopping websites are valid and not spoofed “lookalikes” before entering financial information;

- Never click on links in solicitations;

- Know that if the deal is too good to be true, it probably is;

- Pay with credit cards that offer additional consumer protection; and

- Avoid buying from sellers who request payment from a third-party source.
