Attorney General Merrick B. Garland addressed the nation on July 14, 2024, regarding the attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump. In his statement, Garland expressed relief that Trump was unharmed and extended condolences to the family of a spectator who was killed during the incident.

"I want to begin by saying that I am grateful that former President Trump is safe following yesterday’s horrific assassination attempt," Garland stated. He also conveyed sympathy for those critically injured and their families, emphasizing the Justice Department's support.

Garland commended law enforcement officers for their bravery during the attack and mentioned his morning briefings with Justice Department personnel and federal partners. He informed that he had briefed President Biden in the Situation Room about the ongoing investigation.

"I have directed the FBI, the ATF, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and the Department’s National Security Division to bring every available resource to bear on this investigation," Garland announced.

He underscored that such violence is an assault on democracy itself and reiterated zero tolerance from both the Justice Department and American citizens. "This must stop," he concluded before handing over to Director Wray.
