The Office of the Attorney General in North Dakota has announced a job opening for the position of Assistant Attorney General, specifically serving as Natural Resources and Native American Affairs General Counsel. The position is full-time with a comprehensive state benefit package, located at 500 North 9th Street, Bismarck, ND. The closing date for applications is July 26, 2024.
Matthew Sagsveen, Director of the Natural Resources and Native American Affairs Division, will be the selecting supervisor for this role. The division provides legal services to state agencies involved in regulating North Dakota's natural resources. These agencies include the Department of Environmental Quality, Department of Water Resources, Industrial Commission (including the State Mill and Elevator), Department of Mineral Resources, Pipeline Authority, Parks and Recreation Department, Game and Fish Department, several commodity boards among others.
The successful candidate will represent these agencies in all legal matters and collaborate with other attorneys within the division to provide guidance on various issues. Responsibilities include managing legal operations for these agencies, developing strong working relationships with clients and stakeholders, conducting legal research, drafting legislation, providing legislative testimony when required, evaluating litigation merits against the agencies and representing them in administrative and civil proceedings if necessary.
Applicants must be licensed to practice law in North Dakota or expect imminent admission to the bar. A minimum of one year’s experience practicing general civil litigation or comparable litigation-related experience is preferred; judicial clerkship may substitute this requirement. Candidates must demonstrate high ethical standards with a clean disciplinary record along with advanced interpersonal skills needed to work effectively with public entities.
Additional qualifications include excellent time management skills, proven ability or potential to produce high-quality legal work product and successful completion of background checks.
