The Office of the Attorney General in North Dakota has announced an opening for the position of Deputy Solicitor General. The position, designated as No. 125-31487, offers a salary commensurate with experience and includes a full-time state benefit package. Applications are being accepted until July 24, 2023.
Philip Axt, the Solicitor General, will oversee the selection process. The role involves supporting the Solicitor General in appellate advocacy and constitutional litigation. Responsibilities include conducting thorough legal research focused on both federal and state constitutional law, drafting and editing legal briefs and motions, staying updated on national legal developments affecting state interests, assisting in developing litigation strategies, advocating in state and federal courts, managing additional litigation support counsel, and other duties as assigned.
In addition to a monthly salary, the position provides fully paid health insurance for employees and their families (including a wellness rider), options for employee-paid dental and vision insurance, participation in the state NDPERS defined contribution retirement plan or a 457 deferred compensation plan, medical spending account contributions, and earning annual leave and sick leave.
Minimum qualifications include being licensed to practice law in North Dakota or another state with plans to seek admission to the North Dakota bar within one year. Candidates must demonstrate high academic or professional achievement, excellent legal research skills using Westlaw and other tools, strong written and verbal communication skills, dedication to the responsibilities of the position, confidentiality maintenance ability, high ethical standards with a clean discipline record, harmonious working relationships capability with supervisors and colleagues, successful interview process completion along with background checks.
Preferred but not required experiences include prior appellate brief writing and oral argument experience as well as managing complex litigation.
