Assistant Attorney General position open in Bismarck

The Office of Attorney General in Bismarck, North Dakota, has announced an opening for the position of Assistant Attorney General. The role, identified as Position No: 125-615, offers a salary range between $81,000 and $105,000 annually. Applications will be accepted until July 17, 2024.

This full-time position includes a comprehensive state benefit package and is open to both internal and external candidates. Jeremy Ensrud, Director of the Criminal Law Division, will oversee the selection process.

The Assistant Attorney General will be responsible for prosecuting criminal cases in state court. Duties include providing co-chair assistance to county state's attorneys upon request, drafting pleadings, attending court hearings, litigating criminal cases at trial, and handling subsequent appeals. Travel is required for court hearings. Additionally, the role involves advising agents with the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation on case investigations and sex offender registration requirements.

Teaching responsibilities are also part of this position; the attorney will instruct various criminal classes at the Law Enforcement Training Academy in Bismarck and classes for the BCI basic investigations school. Participation in several statutorily required committees as a representative of the Office of Attorney General is expected.

In addition to a monthly salary, benefits include fully paid health insurance for employees and their families, optional dental and vision insurance plans, participation in the state NDPERS defined benefit retirement plan or a 457 deferred compensation plan option. Employees can also contribute to a medical spending account and earn annual and sick leave. Eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program is available.

Applicants must meet several qualifications including being licensed to practice law in North Dakota or expecting imminent admission to the North Dakota Bar. A minimum of three years’ prosecution experience is preferred along with high ethical standards and excellent communication skills.
