Fifth Judicial District announces vacancy for Summit County judge

The Fifth Judicial District Nominating Commission has announced a vacancy for the position of county judge in Summit County. The vacancy will arise due to the Honorable Edward J. Casias not standing for re-election in 2024, with the position becoming available on January 4, 2025.

The commission will convene on July 24, 2024, at the Summit County Justice Center in Breckenridge, Colorado, to interview and select nominees for appointment by the governor. To qualify, applicants must be electors of Summit County at the time of investiture and admitted to practice law in Colorado. The annual salary for this position is $184,704. Initially, county judges serve a provisional term of two years; subsequent terms are four years if approved by voters.

Application forms can be obtained from Chief Justice Brian Boatright's office or the Office of the Court Executive in Breckenridge. They are also available online at courts.state.co.us/Careers/Judge.cfm. Completed applications must be emailed by 4 p.m. on July 2, 2024. Late applications will not be considered.

Suggestions for candidates can be submitted by letter to any nominating commission member and copied to the ex officio chair by 4 p.m. on June 25, 2024.

Nominating commission members include Chris Romer of Vail; Phyllis Adams of Idaho Springs; Karen McCarthy of Leadville; and Patricia Oliver, Maryjo Zweig, and Sarah Thorsteinson of Breckenridge.
