The Justice Department has declared its intention to monitor the upcoming elections in Prince George’s County, Maryland on May 14. The monitoring aims to ensure compliance with federal voting rights laws.

This enforcement effort is a collaboration between the department’s Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland. Their joint mission is to uphold federal voting rights laws that safeguard all citizens' access to the ballot.

The department routinely deploys its staff across the country to ensure compliance with federal civil rights laws during elections. Additionally, federal observers from the Office of Personnel Management are also deployed when authorized by a federal court order.

The Civil Rights Division’s Voting Section works in conjunction with U.S. Attorneys’ Offices to enforce civil provisions of various federal statutes that protect voting rights. These include the Voting Rights Act, National Voter Registration Act, Help America Vote Act, Civil Rights Act, and Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act.

Further information about voting and elections can be found on the Justice Department’s website at www.justice.gov/voting. Detailed knowledge about the Voting Rights Act and other federal voting laws can be accessed at www.justice.gov/crt/voting-section. Complaints regarding potential violations of federal voting rights laws can be submitted through the Civil Rights Division’s website at civilrights.justice.gov or via telephone at 1-800-253-3931.
