The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is currently looking into an officer-involved shooting that took place in the Town of Grand Chute, Wis. on the evening of Friday, April 12, 2024.
According to the report, Outagamie County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ellis Brooks discharged his firearm, striking William Jae Kil Nelson, 22, who was observed with a knife at the scene. The incident unfolded after deputies responded to a vehicle crash on W. Prospect Avenue in the Town of Grand Chute. Outagamie County Sheriff’s Deputy Noah Yeck attempted to use a taser on Nelson, which was unsuccessful.
"Life saving measures were performed. Nelson was transported to a local hospital and has since succumb to his injuries," stated the report.
It was confirmed that no law enforcement officers or other individuals sustained injuries during the episode. Outagamie County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ellis Brooks is currently on administrative leave in accordance with agency policy.
The report also mentioned that all involved deputies were equipped with body cameras at the time of the incident. The investigation is being led by DCI, with assistance from various law enforcement agencies including the Wisconsin State Patrol, Grand Chute Police Department, and Appleton Police Department.
"DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Outagamie County District Attorney when the investigation concludes," the report added.
